BJCP National Written Proficiency Exam: mechanics

Grounded line-by-line in raw/study-guide/BJCP_Study_Guide.pdf (rev. Dec 2017). The 2023 style-question change is the only override, marked in red.

Reading order for every fact: Study Guide (mechanics) + Guidelines 2021 (style content) are sacred. The Study Guide is the 2017/2015 edition, so its style numbers and the 15% parameters rule are dated. Where it conflicts with V.2023 (parameters) the change wins; for everything else the Study Guide stands.

The shape of the exam

Closed book, 90 minutes, two sections.

Criteria-based grading. Rule of thumb for full credit: ~2 pages per essay answer (Study Guide, "Essay Portion"). National pass = 80% composite (written + tasting) plus 20 experience points (≥10 judging).

S0 · Style question (20% each, TWO of them)

"Describe, compare and contrast these three styles: style-1, style-2, and style-3."Study Guide, verbatim stem

Always THREE styles (a triplet), drawn from a fixed pairing pool. The printed rubric:

WeightWhat it asks
50%Sensory: aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel of each style, per Guidelines.
25%Compare/contrast: ingredients, characteristics, background (history, fermentation, serving).
10%One classic commercial example per style (must be a Guidelines-listed example).
15%Parameters: OG, IBU, ABV, colour. REMOVED V.2023, write none on S0.

Post-V.2023 the remaining 85% renormalises (exact split [VERIFY-RAW] against the V.2023 notice). Relative picture is certain: sensory is half-plus, compare/contrast second, examples small.

Hard-won correction. The S0 style universe is broader than the 12 recipe styles. Treat highly connected styles such as Märzen as study priorities, especially with amber/related comparison partners such as Altbier, Vienna Lager, International Amber Lager, Best Bitter, Dunkles Bock. Prepare the full comparison list; do not assume any style or triplet is eliminated.

R0 · Recipe and Procedure (T14) (20%)

"Provide a complete ALL-GRAIN recipe and procedure for a <style>."
WeightWhat it asks
15%Style description (per Guidelines).
15%Target parameters: batch size, OG, FG, IBU/HBU, colour. The only essay where parameters score.
40%Ingredients: list, why appropriate, quantities, and how quantities were calculated (show the math).
30%Full procedure mash to packaging, with style-based reasoning for each step.

The 12 R0 styles (fixed pool): Belgian Tripel, Doppelbock, American Porter, Irish Stout, Märzen, American IPA, Weissbier, Strong Bitter, Festbier, Czech Premium Pale Lager, German Pils, Double IPA.

C0 · Beer Characteristics

T1, "Describe and discuss three beer characteristics (a, b, c)":

WeightWhat it asks
30%Describe each + how it is perceived.
40%Causes and controls for each (exhaustive cause lists live here).
30%Styles where each is appropriate AND inappropriate (list 3+ each).

The 14 characteristics are drawn from: cloudiness · buttery · low head retention · astringency · phenolic · light body · fruitiness · sourness · cooked corn · bitterness · cardboard · sherry-like · acetaldehyde · alcoholic.

T3, Body and mouthfeel: 40% body (define / perceive / control / light-vs-full examples) · 45% three other mouthfeel aspects (perceive + control) · 15% styles for each.
